Some Important Features

·          Laboratories of the Petrology & Mineralogy and Stratigraphy & Biostratigraphy branches are equipped with modern amenities like X-ray diffractometer (XRD) Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Digital Microscope etc.

·          Engineering and Geotechnical Laboratory is well equipped to determine geotechnical characteristics of soil/rock composition for civil constructions.

·          Geophysical mapping are carried out with the help of gravity, magnetic, seismic and electrical methods. GSB has the capability of computerized data processing and also well logging.

·          The Computer Cell of GSB is fully equipped with state-of-the-art computers, peripherals and software to work for Remote Sensing & Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has a Local Area Network (LAN) for storing and sharing data.

·          GSB is fully equipped with Rotary Conventional and Wire Line Drilling Units, and are capable of drilling up to 2000 meters.

·          Analytical Chemistry Laboratory has been moderately upgraded with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer.

·          The library of this department has the largest collection of books and journals of earth science in the country. Many old and valuable books, publications and maps form the cream of the collection.

·          A good number of mineral resources’ collections of Bangladesh are displayed at the Geological Museum of GSB, which remains open for all during office hours.

·          Rock or mineral samples from drill holes are continuously collected during drilling for analysis to evaluate the mineral deposits. As these samples are extremely valuable resources, they are carefully preserved for future record and research. A core library has been set up at Bogra office premises for systematic and scientific preservation of core samples.

·          The department is continually upgrading its capabilities through training of geo-scientific manpower and procuring the laboratory equipments to provide modern facilities.

Future Plan

·          Completion of the geological mapping for the rest of Bangladesh at a scale of 1:50 000.

·          Acceleration of mineral exploration activities.

·          Preparation of geotechnical and engineering geological maps for planned urbanization.

·          Studies for environmental impact assessment and mitigation of natural hazards; especially arsenic contamination in ground water, and cyclone hazard in the coastal areas.

·          Establishment of a database in GIS.
